How to get from Hallstatt to Vienna

If you’re travelling from Hallstatt to Vienna, you have several travel options. For travelers on a budget, the train is the cheapest way to travel from Hallstatt to Vienna. The fastest way to travel from Hallstatt to Vienna is by car, which is of course the best way to travel from Hallstatt to Vienna since it’s the only direct option. There is no direct bus from Hallstatt to Vienna, and you need to transfer to a train anyways, so this is one of the slowest and most inconvenient options.

To travel by train from Hallstatt to Vienna, you need to get to Hallstatt Bahnhof station and purchase a ticket to Vienna Hauptbahnhof (or just buy a ticket in advance online). However, none of the trains are direct so you will have at least one transfer - sometimes multiple. You will arrive at Wien Hauptbahnhof in Vienna. There are about 15 trains a day. The first train leaves around 10:10 AM and the last train leaves at around 18:00 PM. On weekends there’s a direct train from Hallstatt to Vienna. The train from Hallstatt to Vienna is operated by RailJet or Austrian Railways, with train tickets from Hallstatt to Vienna costing €40-65 on average for the 3 and a half hour trip. Trains have bathrooms on board, and usually offer a dining car.

Hallstatt to Vienna by bus

There are no buses to take you from Hallstatt to Vienna. The bus only goes from Hallstatt to Obertraun, a small town 10 minutes outside of Hallstatt, after which you would need to take a train.
