Overview: Car trip from Positano to Naples

A car trip from Positano to Naples generally means that you either took an enriching day trip, or your holiday on the amazing Amalfi Coast is coming to a close. But that doesn’t mean your Italian adventure is over! Whether you choose a shared shuttle or private driver, taking a car trip from Positano to Naples gives you the opportunity to further immerse yourself in Italian history and culture. Enjoy the winding road along the Amalfi Coast one last time before traveling beside the Bay of Naples. Stop to step back in time in the perfectly preserved ruins of Pompeii, hike to the top of Mt. Vesuvius, or have lunch and spectacular wine at Cantina del Vesuvio.

And once you reach Naples, you’ll find Italy’s 3rd largest city just as intoxicating as limoncello. Naples’ historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site filled with lavish palaces, churches, statues and fountains. And as a historic power and center for the arts, there’s no shortage of cultural attractions. Plus, pizza!

About Naples

With a population of nearly 1,000,000, Naples is the third-largest city in Italy after Rome and Milan. The regional capital of Campania, Naples was founded by Greeks in the first millennium BC, making it one of the oldest continuously inhabited urban areas in the world. This long history, combined with its status as a Mediterranean power and center for the arts, has shaped the city into the exciting metropolis it is today. The port has been abuzz for over 2000 years and remains the lifeblood of Naples’ economy, giving the city a very “working” atmosphere. Meanwhile, its historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site for the many palaces, churches, statues, and fountains that line its streets and plazas.

Then, of course, there’s Naples’ most famous invention: pizza. Seeking out the best pie is an adventure in itself. From L’Antica Pizzeria Da Michele, where Julia Roberts ate in Eat, Pray, Love, to fly-by-night street pizza carts, Naples is truly a feast for the senses. And pizza isn’t the only culinary delight. From fried street food (pizza included), to eggplant parmesan, and seafood filling everything from soup to pasta, Naples is one of Italy’s epicurean epicenters.

Things to do when you get to Naples

As the third-largest city in Italy, there’s no shortage of things to do when you get to Naples. If you didn’t stop to visit the ruins of Pompeii or Herculaneum, or hike Mt. Vesuvius, on your private transfer from Positano to Naples, those are all popular day trips. The city proper though is best known for 3 things: port, palaces, and pizza.

Palace hop around Piazza del Plebiscito

You can easily spend a day at the Piazza del Plebiscito, Naples’ main square. Surrounding this huge space are multiple palaces, including the Royal Palace, Palazzo Salerno, and Prefecture Palace, and the Basilica Royal. From here, you can set out to find more palaces, and historic churches like the Naples Cathedral or the Sam Domenico Maggiore.

Take in the views from Castel Nuovo

The castle you can see from the Piazza del Plebiscito, is the iconic Castel Nuovo. Built in the 13th century, it’s been modified, updated, and remodeled over the years, and now has a Baroque triumphal arch as its entrance. It’s well worth taking a tour to see the interiors, and the view of the port from the ramparts is the best in the city.

Explore Santa Lucia

Head southwest from the Piazza del Plebiscito and you’ll enter the district of Santa Lucia. This warren of narrow cobbled alleys is the perfect place to lose yourself in Neopolitan living. Originally a fishing settlement, it’s a great place to stop for some authentic seafood dishes.

Patrol the port

Keep heading downhill in Santa Lucia, and you’ll finally reach Naples harbor. The basis of Naple’s economy, the harbor is split into a number of different ports, and is abuzz at all hours. During the day though, you’ll want to pay a visit to the Castel dell'Ovo. The oldest fortification still standing in Naples, there’s been some defensive structure here since the 6th century BC.

Find the best pizza in Naples

Sample as much pizza as possible during your Naples explorations. Restaurants in the city battle for the title of “Best Pizza in Naples”. L’Antica Pizzeria Da Michele is always popular, especially after Julia Roberts ate here in Eat, Pray, Love. But you also don’t want to miss a distinctly Neopolitan experience; keep your eyes peeled for street pizza carts, which fry their pies rather than bake them.

Questions & Answers about Traveling from Positano to Naples

If you’re on a budget, taking a shared shuttle with a company like Daytrip is a good option. It brings you directly from Positano to Naples for only a few Euros more than the cheapest transportation option - taking a bus to Sorrento, and then a train from Sorrento to Naples. But overall, the best way to travel from Sorrento to Naples is by car service. It offers a seamless door-to-door experience, freedom to enjoy the breathtaking scenery, and the comfort of traveling at your own pace.
The distance from Sorrento to Naples is about 39 miles (63 km).
The cheapest way to get from Positano to Naples is to take a bus from Positano to Sorrento (about 10-12 EUR), and then the Circumvesuviana train from Sorrento to Naples (about 3.10 EUR). We’d recommend splurging for the 7 EUR Campania Express from Sorrento to Naples, which has guaranteed seats and other benefits. But if you value your time and comfort, the Daytrip Shuttle will bring you directly from Positano to Naples for as low as 20 EUR per person.
No, you have to take a bus or taxi (or ferry in the summer) from Positano to Sorrento first. From Sorrento you can take the Circumvesuviana, which is slower and often sold out, or the Campania Express, a much more comfortable ride made for tourists (and only 4 EUR more per ticket).
No there isn’t. You first need to take a bus from Positano to Sorrento (about 10-12 EUR), and then another bus from Sorrento to Naples. But at 35 EUR per person this is the most expensive option if you are traveling in a group. If you’re going to the Naples airport, there is a more affordable bus from Sorrento that’s only 10 EUR per person.
Unless you’re planning to spend some time in Sorrento, or are on an extremely tight budget, we wouldn’t recommend taking public transportation from Positano to Naples. Since there are no direct public transportation options, all of them require you to take a (often overcrowded) bus from Positano to Sorrento. During the summer, taking a shuttle is the best budget option as it’s not much more expensive and brings you directly from Positano to Naples. If you value freedom and comfort, the best option is a car service like Daytrip. You get the comfort and convenience of taking a private car door-to-door, and the option to stop for sightseeing.
Traveling early in the morning or later in the afternoon can help you avoid traffic and enjoy the journey with fewer crowds (an especially good idea if you’re taking the bus, which fills up). Also, don't forget to carry water, sunscreen, and a camera to capture the stunning views. If you’re renting a car or using a car service like Daytrip, take advantage of the amazing sightseeing opportunities like Pompeii, Mt. Vesuvius, or Cantina del Vesuvio.
