Kissamos

Feel the gentle caress of beautiful beaches and ancient history in this authentic port town.

About

Set deep in a bay between the Gramvousa and Rodopou Peninsulas, Kissamos is a seaside town that has stayed true to its deep roots. The port has been in use since the days of ancient Greece, and flourished under the Romans, who built up villas, baths, a theater, and a fortress. Head to the archeological museum of Kissamos, housed in a historic Venetian manor, to see ancient ceramics, statues, coins, and some excellent mosaics. From there, follow the delightful Skalidi street through the old town, browsing the small shops of local tradesmen in the traditional buildings. Follow this down to the fishing port and sit at one of the tavarnas. Kissamos is an agricultural center for the region, so be sure to try the local brandy-like dry red wine. From here, head towards the main port to see the 10th century Ioannis Damialis church built into the rock face, and pass through a tunnel to the beautiful Damiali beach.
