Innsbruck

The home of emperors, the only thing more impressive than the surrounding Alps is this idyllic mountain town's rich cultural history.

About

Nestled in an alpine valley, Innsbruck offers panoramic views of the towering Alps. If those soaring peaks don’t take your breath away, the opulent architecture surely will. Settled since the early Stone Age, Innsbruck has been a coveted commercial center since Roman times. Over the next 1000 years, Innsbruck grew in stature, becoming a seat of European politics and culture as Emperor Maximilian I took up residence in the 1490s. Today, the city’s rich heritage is proudly on display, from the lavish Golden Roof, a balcony with 2,657 fire-gilded copper tiles erected to mark Emperor Maximilian I’s marriage to Bianca Maria Sforza, to the Tyrolean Folk Art Museum, where centuries of alpine culture are on display.
