To Ibarra The White City Of Ecuador
Ibarra is popular with tourists all year round due to it’s favourable Mediterranean climate, kept warm due to it’s close proximity to the equator but kept cool due to it’s high elevation. Nicknamed the “White City” in relation to it’s white-washed colonial-era houses, and blessed with a number of old cobbled streets, this city particularly comes alive on Saturdays when the market comes to town. Ibarra is also famous for its home-made ice creams called “Helados de paila” which was first made during Incan times and is still enjoyed today. The locals take great pride in the many beautiful religious buildings in the old town, each with unique art and architecture, such as historical wood carvings. For a great viewpoint of the surrounding area and the Yahuarcocha Lake it is worth visiting the Archangel Michael monument, from which you can also see the nearby towns of San Antonio and Cotacachi.
