Prague to Durnstein

This medieval town on the banks of the Danube is renowned for its historic charms and wine-growing tradition.

From PragueThe City of a Hundred Spires

According to legend, Prague was founded in the 8th century when the duchess Libuše stood atop a rocky cliff overlooking the Vltava and prophesied: "I see a great city whose glory will touch the stars!". In the 14th century, Charles IV Holy Roman Emperor and King of Bohemia personally elevated Prague into an imperial capital. Charles himself designed the layout of Nové Město, laid the first stone of the Charles Bridge, and founded Charles University. Over the following centuries, Prague experienced its fair share of ups and downs, not to mention a few defenestrations, but was spared the devastation that befell many European cities. Every visitor’s first stop should be the Old Town Square, for the beautiful Baroque buildings lining it, and the famed astronomical clock on the Old Town Hall. From here, you can easily reach the world famous Charles Bridge, and make your way up to expansive castle complex.

To Durnstein Where Tradition Meets Elegance

Durnstein first sprang to fame back in the tenth century when Richard the Lionheart was imprisoned in Durnstein Castle by Leopold V after tearing up the Austrian flag and refusing to share his spoils of war. His petulance earned him a year in the castle dungeon until a ransom was paid for his release. The castle ruins still remain intact and after a short hike, these romantic remnants offer panoramic views of the natural and cultural sites that line the Wachau Valley. The landscape is marked with natural beauty such as the old vineyards that when coupled with the warm climate, create an unforgettably picturesque scene that lives long in the memory. After strolling the medieval streets and passageways, what better way to refresh yourself than with a glass or two of the excellent local wine at one of the cozy taverns or shaded garden restaurants that populate the landscape.
