Porto to Seville

The Andalusian capital is also its cultural center, filled with flamenco, fine food, and countless historic monuments, including the world's largest Gothic churches.

From Porto Sip on Sweet History

Dating back as far as 300 BC, this ancient port city is steeped in history and tradition. The city was built along the hills overlooking the Douro river, providing breathtaking vistas over the colourful buildings and narrow cobbled streets. Porto is famed for its production of Port wine, whose name is derived from that of the city itself, and its historical centre was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996. This fascinating and vibrant city is rapidly becoming one of Western Europe’s most respected tourist destinations, and will appeal to a wide range of visitors. Chock full of landmarks, such as the ornately furnished Palácio da Bolsa, even Porto's book shops, like Livraria Lello, are jaw-droppingly beautiful. Of course, in the home of port, you'd be remiss to miss sampling the iconic wine.

To Seville Tappas into History

Founded around the 8th century BC, Seville grew into a major trade center under the Romans - a status it maintained through much of its long history, especially trade with the New World. The city's old town reflects these centuries of prosperity, perhaps best exemplified by its Gothic cathedral - the largest in the world. This UNESCO World Heritage Site was built over the course of a century on the site of a former mosque, using the most refined and extravagant construction techniques to showcase the city's wealth. The cathedral's massive facade is impossibly ornate, covered with intricate carvings. The iconic bell-tower is topped with the original mosque's minaret. The interior is even more richly decorated, and houses the tomb of Christopher Columbus. Surrounding the cathedral is an enchanting mix of majestic Mudéjar palaces, historic homes and winding medieval lanes. And while in the city, be sure to take part in the locals' favourite past time: tapas!
