La Spezia to Chiavari

Famous for its namesake chair, it's this city's long history that will sweep you off your feet.

From La SpeziaLa Spezia

Since the days of the Roman Empire La Spezia has been one of the region’s most important ports and trade centers. It’s also home to Italy’s largest naval base. Many travelers overlook that it also has an atmospheric Old Town and is a great base for exploring the surrounding area. Walking the narrow lanes, it’s still possible to see architectural elements ranging from engraved 14th century portals to double lancet windows, baroque pediments, and embellishments often seen on Renaissance palaces. The Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta offers a survey of changing architectural styles as it took 600 years to fully complete. For a more nuanced look at Italian history, head to the 13th century San Giorgio Castle, which has an archaeological museum with artefacts dating back to the Copper Age. The Naval Technical Museum offers fascinating insights into Italian naval history with fantastic displays like cannons, dive suits, model ships, and control panels from battleships.

To Chiavari Built on Lost Empires

A pre-Roman necropolis from the 7th century BC was uncovered in Chiavari and reveals the town’s rich history. Built under the Via Aurelia, a Roman road project commissioned by C. Aurelius Cotta in 241 BC, the town has enjoyed an active fishing trade, lace industry, abundant olive farms, and even the invention of the iconic Chiavari chair in the years following. Chiavari hosts a fascinating mix of architecture, from the Tuscan-Gothic style, Palazzo di Giustizia (Palace of Justice), to the Ancient- Roman inspired Cattedrale di N. S. dell'Orto (Shrine of Our Lady dell’ Orto). Walk along the seafront’s pebbled beach or roam through the “carrugi” into the historic center that dates from the Middle Ages. Participate in the city's routine by dining in family owned restaurants or window shop the many boutiques.
