From Imola Small Town, Big History
Situated along the river Santerno about 50 km southeast of Bologna, Imola has been under Roman, barbarian, Papal, and Austrian rule at various points throughout history. One of its most prominent historic sites is Rocco Sforzesca, or Sforza Castle. First built in the 14th century on the remains of a pre-existing 11th-century tower, the fortress has primarily served as a residence and prison, and is now home to a museum consisting of over 600 pieces dating from the 14th to 20th centuries. Formula One racing fans will also know Imola as the home of the famous Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dineo Ferrari, named after the late founder of Ferrari and his son, and the former venue of the Formula One San Marino Grand Prix.
