Hitler's hidden headquarters on the Eastern Front set the scene for the infamous failed assassination attempt on the Fuhrer.
Hitler arrived to his top-secret headquarters on June 23rd, 1941, and would spend the majority of the next 3 years within this forest complex. While it was top-secret and heavily guarded, the Wolf’s Lair was also the site of the most famous attempt on Hitler’s Life. On July 20th, 1944, Claus von Stauffenberg left a suitcase bomb in a meeting room where he knew Hitler would be. The rapid advance of the Red Army during the Baltic Offensive, forced Hitler to leave the complex on November 20th, 1944, and it was destroyed on January 25th, 1945, 48 hours before the arrival of Soviet forces. The site was l rather than turned into a museum or memorial. Despite the Nazis best efforts, and copious amounts of explosives, large portions of the heavily fortified base remain intact - although now with a coating of moss and lichen.
