Niort Saving the Past
An important French financial center, Niort also knows the value of history, and is filled with Medieval and Renaissance monuments. Dominating the town is the 12th century Donjon. Built by Henry II and Richard the Lionheart, it is one of the largest castles remaining from this period, and now houses a Museum of Ethnology and Archaeology. The Pilori is a 14th century Renaissance building with some 15th century Gothic embellishments that once served as the city’s town hall. The Gothic Church of Notre-Dame is the tallest building in the region thanks to its spire. The 19th century market hall, built from glass and steel, still hosts markets on every day but Monday.
