Predating the Romans, the ancient village of Naro was a regional center during the Middle Ages, and served as an important fortified settlement under Arab and Norman rule. Even today, the 14th century Chiaramontano Castle keeps watch over the village from atop Mount Agragante, providing stupendous views of the area. In the rustic town center, visitors are treated to an array of beautiful monuments, such as the 11th century cathedral, accessed via 209 steps, or the Church of Santa Caterina, which has some fantastic frescoes by the local artist Cecco. Visitors can even find one of the original medieval fortified gates, now known as the Porta d’Oro. While exploring the town, take the time to stop by a trattoria to enjoy some of the local cuisine, and make sure to finish your meal with some ricotta-filled ravioli.
