Napier

Tourists flock to this UNESCO-nominated World Heritage Site known for its Art Deco architecture and picture-perfect Marine Parade.

About

After much of the area was leveled in the 1931 Hawke’s Bay earthquake, the town of Napier was quickly restored and buildings were erected in the popular Art Deco style. Today, visitors can meander the streets and take in the sights in one of the best-preserved Art Deco towns in the world. Don’t miss the Art Deco Festival if you’re travelling through the area in February. Take a guided walking tour any day of the year (except Christmas Day)! After gazing up at the exemplary edifices, look down on the city from the city’s Viewing Platform. Stay on level ground and snap a photo in front of one of the many murals painted on the sea walls surrounding the city. Before leaving, make sure to visit one of the most photographed statues in the country: Pania of the Reef on the Marine Parade.
