The original monastery of Mega Spelio was built already in 362 by the brothers Symeon and Theodore, making it one of the oldest Orthodox monasteries in Greece. Over the centuries, the monastery was burnt down on several occasions, always being restored to its previous glory. The last blow came during the Nazi invasion, when German officers set the structure ablaze and killed most of its inhabitants. Despite its tumultuous history, the monastery is a beautiful sight, boasting truly gorgeous architectural. While the super-structure stretches 8 stories, much of the interior is built into the mountain's caves. Apart from impressing regular visitors, the monastery is a popular pilgrimage site.
