Bulgaria
This carving, high up a cliff face is so unusual it was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
In the 8th century, Bulgarians scaled a 100 meter cliff to carve the Madara Rider into the rock face. The giant figure - a mounted knight triumphing over a lion is an outstanding example of Bulgarian sculpture with surprisingly realist tendencies. Along with its artistic importance, the piece represents a key piece of Bulgarian heritage as it dates from the earliest days of the Bulgarian state, with its inscription chronicling important events during the reigns of very famous Khans: Tervel, Kormisos and Omurtag. The relief’s artistic and historic qualities are unparalleled in Europe, making this rock carving one-of-a-kind. Please note that there's a short walk to reach the site.
