Ita

Known as one of the oldest cities in Paraguay, the lagoon at the heart of this charming town is surrounded by local legends.

About

Ita was founded in 1539 and later became a center for Jesuit missionary activity. In these early times women were taught how to make pottery and ceramics, thanks to the abundance of mud in and around the town. The extension of these teachings have proven to be a cultural trademark and center of industry for Ita. The artisan center “San Blas” is a center where you can browse and buy handcrafted goods by the natives of Ita. Then visit the lagoon at the center of town, where it’s origins vary. One legend states that an elderly woman refused to share her well water with visitors, resulting in the well waters overflowing so much, that it created the lagoon that sits there today.
