Fort Portal

The seat of the Toro Kingdom is the friendly gateway to some of Uganda’s most spectacular natural attractions.

Named after Sir Gerald Herbert Portal, the British Consul General of Zanzibar who came to Uganda in the 1890s to formalise the protectorate over the country, Fort Portal has transformed from a colonial stronghold to a dynamic town that’s the perfect base from which to explore the amazing surrounding area. Within the city proper, you can seek out the fun statue of the Sir Portal before heading to Tooro Palace for panoramic views of the area. The Tooro Botanical Gardens, were established in 2001, and replaced 100 acres of eucalyptus trees with indigenous species, and are a great place to sample Uganda’s natural diversity. The city is also famous for its tea plantations, so be sure to take the time for a fresh cuppa.
