Ettal Abbey

There are few days more serene than a visit to a beautiful abbey set in the lush Bavarian countryside, especially when that abbey makes its own cheese, liqueurs, and beer.


Founded in 1330, Ettal Abbey differs from many other monasteries in its business savvy. Profits from its many endeavors all go toward running the abbey school that specializes in modern languages and humanities. Visitors are free to roam the abbey and the grounds and take in the exquisite church, which is a prime example of Bavarian rococo. The main feature of the church is the enormous dome fresco covered in a mass of swirling clouds while the pink and blue vision of heaven are typical for the rococo period of elaborate ceiling painting. For something a little different, then tours of the brewery, distillery, and cheese making facilities are also available and these items can also be purchased from the on-site shop. The monastery is renowned for its liqueurs made from centuries-old recipes, which are best summed up by their own advert, which reads “Two monks know how it's made; two million Germans know how it tastes”.
