Conimbriga A Fount of Historical Knowledge
One of the largest Roman settlements excavated in Portugal, Conimbriga is a fascinating look into the history of the Roman Empire. This walled urban settlement is encircled by a curtain of stone structures approximately 1500 meters long. The vaulted entrance was at one time was defended by two towers, and inside, the community contains as a partially-reconstructed forum, a basilica, commercial shops, thermal spas, aqueducts, insulae, and homes of various sizes. The atmosphere is made truly authentic by the still-functioning Roman fountain at the House of Fountains. The site includes a well-appointed museum with useful information about each part of the settlement to help you make the most of your visit.
