Church of Valega

Covered in colourful tiles inside and out, this 18th-century church might be one of the prettiest in the country.

Church of Valega A Tiled Masterpiece

With origins stretching back to the Middle Ages, the current church dates to the 18th century. But it’s not the age that makes the church special, it’s the multicoloured tiles that cover the facade and interior. A masterpiece of the very Portuguese art of tile painting, the 20th century renovations transformed it into one of the remarkable churches in Portugal. The larger-than-life tiled panels depict the different stages of the life of Virgin Mary. Along with the painted tiles, the ceilings inside have been replaced with exotic woods, and marble adorns the indoor walls, coir and general wainscots.
