Built on a hilltop to keep watch of land and sea, this former Arab stronghold offers great views and historic architecture.
In the 10th century, this coastal bluff offered the Cordoba Caliphate the perfect position for a citadel that could control the territory, specially the coast and the Júcar river mouth. Though it withstood one siege, it was captured during the Christian Reconquest in the 13th century. Today, the fortress shares the hilltop with the Sanctuary of the Virgin of the Castle, a Neo-Romanesque church erected towards the end of the 19th century. From atop the hill visitors are rewarded with panoramic views of the coast, and the surrounding landscape.
