Alquezar The Canyon Capital
Growing around an 8th century Moorish Citadel, the charming town of Alquezar is a cultural treasure-trove. Visitors enter the town through a Gothic gate, and are left to meander through the arcaded lanes, leading to the historic town square, which provides the perfect setting to enjoy some local wine. Visitors can head to the Casa Fabián Ethnological Museum, housed in a 17th century house, to learn about the region’s history and its wine-making tradition. After Christians took the town and castle in the 11th century, they added the Collegiate church of Santa Maria la Mayor to the citadel compound. The church seen today was built in the 16th century, though the cloister and carved capitals are from the original 12th century structure. In the surrounding area, visitors will find the UNESCO-listed Vero River Cultural Park, which is home to around 60 caves with prehistoric paintings.
